Ceci n´est pas une montagne
22 letters out of concrete

exhibition der Berg
Palast der Republik, Berlin

Inside the Palast der Republik, the most important building during the existence of GDR, which is constructed out of concrete and steel, the architecture groups raumlabor and exyst built the ex-hibition architecture. They constructed a mountain out of scaffolding and fibre optic mats inside the hall of events. In reference to this work the sentence Ceci n´est pas une montagne, with 20 metres in length, was constructed out of concrete and placed on steelrails in front of the mountain. A bridge wound through the entire hall. From this perspective the steelrails reminded one of an open exercise book and the Magritte quotation of a writing exercise. After the exhibition the letters were placed on a hill in the public space of Berlin and therefore functioned once again as a subtitle for the scene.
